If you have you ever had programs mysteriously installed on your computer, advertisements popping up for no reason, your start page in your browser suddenly being replaced, search results being displayed when you arrive at a file not found page, etc, your system has probably had some spyware or adware installed on it without you being aware of it.

Spyware refers to a program that has been installed on your system, without you knowing about it, that reports some of your activities on your computer back to some company or person . Adware refers more to a program that displays advertisements on your computer. Another variant of these kinds of programs are Keyloggers which record the keystrokes you type on your computer and then either logs them or reports them to the person who installed the program. This is sometimes used by businesses to track employee computer use or by criminals attempting to record your username and password for sensitive sites such as online banks.
